Está bien establecido que la electrodinámica clásica, la electrodinámica cuántica (QED por sus siglas en ingles) y la teoría cuántica de campo (QFT) se basan en la teoría de ondas de Maxwell y sus ecuaciones, pero se entiende mucho menos que estas teorías no se basan en su interpretación inicial de la relación entre los campos E y B, sino en la de Ludvig Lorenz, con quien Maxwell no estaba de acuerdo. Maxwell consideraba que estos dos campos tenían que inducirse cíclicamente para que la velocidad de la luz se mantuviera, mientras que Lorenz consideraba que los dos campos tenían que alcanzar su máxima intensidad sincrónicamente al mismo momento para que se mantuviera esta velocidad, las ecuaciones que permitían ambas interpretaciones. Sin embargo, dos recientes avances confirman que la interpretación de Maxwell era correcta porque, a diferencia de la interpretación de Lorenz, concilia transparentemente la teoría de Maxwell sobre las ondas electromagnéticas, aplicada tan exitosa al nivel macroscópico, con las características electromagnéticas aplicables al nivel subatómico a los fotones electromagnéticos localizados y a las partículas electromagnéticas elementales, cargadas y masivas, de las que están compuestos todos los átomos, y finalmente permite establecer una mecánica clara de emisión y absorción de fotones electromagnéticos por parte de los electrones durante sus interacciones al nivel atómico.
