Abstract:
In 1887 Voigt tried to derive a universal formula for the Doppler effect for the case of a stationary observer and a moving source in an elastic incompressible medium [1]. The simple problem was treated in a very complicated way. With the solution of the equation system Voigt found the already known Doppler formula. Some authors wrongly claim that Voigt proposed in his derivation the constancy of the speed of light relative to all reference frames [2, 3]. Since the Voigt transformation describes the propagation of all waves, such as electromagnetic waves, sound waves and water waves, relative to an observer stationary in an elastic medium, this is in fact not the case [4].
