Abstract:
An experiment is proposed with charged particles passed through crossed electric field of intensity E and magnetic flux intensity B. In classical and relativistic electrodynamics, a particle of charge q would go through the fields at velocity v, without deflection, if Lorentz force qE + qvB = 0. Vectors E and B are perpendicular, such that magnitude E = Bv, making relationship between E and v linear. B kept constant, v/c plotted against E/Bv, with Bc as maximum value of E required for particle to pass straight through the crossed fields at speed of light c. Due to aberration of electric field, relationship between E and v is not linear, but E = Bvγ, with Lorentz factor γ. Non-linearity in E and Bv shows decrease of accelerating force with velocity, discussed here in an electrodynamics with radiation, without relativistic mass increase with speed.
