Abstract:
This article deals with the controversial topic of longitudinal waves in the same medium that carries electromagnetic waves. It is often claimed that such longitudinal waves have never been detected, and that they would interfere with the reflection and refraction of light, and that hence the luminiferous medium must be incompressible, as such, ruling out Maxwell’s sea of molecular vortices. A counter argument will now be offered.
