L'équation de force de Lorentz F= q(E + v×B), qui est utilisée par la communauté des ingénieurs depuis le début du 20e siècle pour contrôler le mouvement des électrons sur trajectoires libres, dans un large éventail d'applications techniques, est une équation généralisée qui fut initialement développée par Hendrik Antoon Lorentz au début du 20e siècle, et qui traite, en une seule formulation, deux aspects très différents du comportement des électrons en mouvement libre. Cet article a pour but de mettre en perspective le contexte historique dans lequel l'équation a été développée, et de clarifier la manière dont ses deux différents aspects peuvent être clairement séparés pour fins de calcul pratique et utilisation dans la recherche fondamentale en physique, pour aider à réconcilier la mécanique classique/relativiste et la mécanique quantique avec l'électromagnétisme et, en particulier, de quelle manière son premier terme peut être lié à la gravitation tandis que son second terme peut être lié à la masse mesurable du point de vue électromagnétique.
