Abstract:
It is shown that an electrostatic force, propagated at the speed of light c, can accelerated a charged particle to that speed and no faster. A particle of charge q moving with speed v in the direction of an electric field of magnitude E encounters a reactive force qEv/c against which work done appears as radiation. At the speed of light, the reactive force becomes equal to the accelerating force and the particle moves at constant speed with constant mass.
