Abstract:

The FitzGerald-Lorentz contraction in the direction of relative motion is the starting point for a simple argument based on the refraction of light that demonstrates that the theory of special relativity violates Snell's law. From this violation, the formal inconsistency of the theory of special relativity is demonstrated, an inconsistency for which only its second fundamental principle can be responsible.
