Abstract:

With a nod to Edgar Rice Burroughs and his novels about “John Carter of Mars”, we put forth this “Barsoom Initiative”. The Barsoom Initiative aims to create a new moon around Mars through the construction of an artificial accretion disc of harvested rocky bodies in the asteroid belt, leveraging advanced space mining technologies and to further – utilizing Martian brine lakes, water ice filled craters and icy asteroids for essential resource extraction. As a critical component, the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) will be retrofitted and relocated to Martian orbit to support asteroid location and mining operations and Martian exploration.
