Abstract:
The physical origin of the fine-structure constant has intrigued many physicists. To illustrate the puzzlingness of the issue let us cite the related comment of two relevant physicists. M.H. MacGregor: “The mystery about α is actually a double mystery: The first mystery, the origin of its numerical value of 1/137, has been recognized and discussed for decades. The second mystery, the range of its domain, is generally unrecognized.” Wolfgang Pauli: “When I die my first question to the Devil will be: What is the meaning of the fine structure constant?” Here we answer to both, M.H. MacGregor and Wolfgang Pauli wonderings, specifying the primordial origin of the fine-structure constant, and to some of its ensuing broad range of applications. The fine-structure constant has been derived in many different ways. The key question is therefore: among its diverse derivations, what is its actual primordial origin?
