Abstract:
Even though Scottish physicist James Clerk Maxwell is credited with having united optics and electromagnetism in the 1860s, the Germans had already linked the speed of light to electricity in the 1850s. Those with a negative opinion about Maxwell often like to point out that Gustav Kirchhoff derived the Telegrapher’s Equations in 1857 without any need for Maxwell’s displacement current. This article will take a closer look at the respective roles of both Kirchhoff and Maxwell in this matter.
