Il est bien établi que l'électrodynamique classique, l'électrodynamique quantique (QED) ainsi que la théorie des champs quantiques (QFT) sont fondées sur la théorie ondulatoire de Maxwell et sur ses équations, mais il est beaucoup moins bien compris que ces théories ne sont pas fondées sur son interprétation initiale de la relation entre les champs E et B, mais plutôt sur celle de Ludvig Lorenz, avec laquelle Maxwell était en désaccord. Maxwell considérait que ces deux champs devaient s'induire mutuellement cycliquement pour que la vitesse de la lumière soit maintenue, tandis que Lorenz considérait que les deux champs devaient atteindre leur intensité maximale de manière synchrone au même moment pour que cette vitesse soit maintenue, les équations permettant les deux interprétations. Toutefois, deux percées récentes permettent maintenant de confirmer que l'interprétation de Maxwell était correcte car, contrairement à l'interprétation de Lorenz, elle permet de réconcilier de façon transparente la théorie des ondes électromagnétiques de Maxwell, appliquée avec tant de succès au niveau macroscopique, avec les caractéristiques électromagnétiques applicables au niveau subatomique aux photons électromagnétiques localisés ainsi qu'aux particules électromagnétiques élémentaires chargées et massives localisées dont tous les atomes sont constitués,
