Abstract:
The null result of the Michelson-Morley (M-M) experiment of 1887 might become a simple physical pheneomenon clearly explained by the laws of classical physics if all factors affecting the velocity of light would be taken into consideration at the outset. The strangeness of the result derives from the hypothesis that the earth moves through a stationary aether, according to the interpretation give to other phenomena, inclucding the aberration of light. The the aether with it superficial properties has never been experimentally confirmed. So beyond the supposed mutual states of motion between the earth and the mysterious aether, the real medium and the mechanism of light propagation were and still remain ambiguous.
